This listing covers calico ryukin and oranda goldfish, two related fancy forms of Carassius auratus. The ryukin carries a high hump behind the head; the oranda develops a raspberry-like growth, called a wen, over the top of the skull, which thickens as the fish matures. Calico means the nacreous scale type: patches of red, orange, black, blue-grey and white over a mottled ground, no two fish alike.
Aquarium care
- Coldwater fish. No heater needed, and they do poorly kept warm.
- They grow large and are messy, so give them volume and strong filtration.
- Keep two or more; goldfish are social.
- Use smooth decor. Long fins and, on orandas, the wen are easily damaged.
- Keep the water clean; a wen traps debris and needs good conditions.
- Omnivorous: sinking pellets, blanched vegetables and frozen foods.
Keep fancy goldfish together rather than with fast comets or shubunkins, which will outfeed them. They are not compatible with tropical community fish.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current goldfish list.
