The ryukin is one of the older Japanese fancy goldfish forms, developed from Carassius auratus and distinguished by a pronounced hump rising behind the head, which gives the fish a short, deep, almost triangular profile. The fins are long and flowing, and the tail is doubled. Assorted means a mix of whatever colours have come in, usually covering red, red and white, calico and metallic orange. It is one of the hardier fancy varieties.

Aquarium care

  • A coldwater fish. It does not need a heater and does badly kept warm.
  • Grows large and produces a lot of waste, so it needs volume and strong filtration.
  • Social. Keep two or more.
  • Wants smooth decor; the deep body and long fins catch on sharp edges.
  • It will uproot and eat soft plants.
  • Omnivorous: sinking goldfish pellets, blanched vegetables and frozen foods. Sinking food reduces air gulping.

Keep fancy goldfish with other fancy goldfish of similar swimming ability. Fast single-tailed goldfish such as comets outcompete them, and tropical community fish are the wrong temperature entirely.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current goldfish list.
