The platinum discus is a solid white to pale silver line of the South American discus (Symphysodon sp.), bred to remove the barring and pattern entirely so the fish reads as a clean disc of light. Discus come from quiet, warm blackwater backwaters of the Amazon, and their shape, a tall flattened circle, is built for hanging almost motionless among submerged branches. They are unhurried, deliberate fish and they reward a keeper who is the same.
Aquarium care
- Needs a tall tank with height as well as footprint.
- Wants warm water, at the top of the tropical range, kept very stable.
- Demands excellent water quality and a consistent water change routine.
- Social. Keep a group of five or more, or a settled pair.
- Slow, careful feeder: quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm and beefheart-based foods.
- Not a beginner's fish. Get the tank stable first.
Best in a species tank or with warm-tolerant, calm tankmates such as sterbai corydoras, cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras. Avoid fast or greedy fish, which will take the food before a discus commits to it.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current discus list.
