The leopard discus is a spotted line of the South American discus (Symphysodon sp.), carrying rows of discrete red-brown spots across a pale cream or white body rather than the connected streaks of a turquoise fish. Spot size and density vary between individuals, and the pattern generally sharpens as the fish matures. Discus are Amazonian cichlids from warm, quiet blackwater, and everything about how they are kept follows from that.
Aquarium care
- Needs a tall tank with real depth front to back.
- Wants warm water at the upper end of the tropical range, held stable.
- Excellent water quality and a consistent water change schedule.
- Social. Keep five or more, or a settled pair.
- Slow feeder: quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations.
- Not a first fish; establish the tank before buying.
Best in a species tank or alongside sterbai corydoras, cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras, all of which tolerate the warmth. Fast, greedy or nippy fish are a poor match.
