The green phantom pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis, catalogued as L200) comes from the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela, and it is one of the more distinctive suckermouth catfish in the hobby. The body is an olive to yellow-green, dusted overall with small pale spots that are densest across the head. It is a river fish from fast, oxygen-rich water, which shapes almost everything about how it should be kept.

Aquarium care

  • A medium-large pleco; expect it to reach around 15 cm or more.
  • Needs strong flow and high dissolved oxygen. This is not a still-water fish.
  • Provide caves or tubes; it is shy and largely nocturnal.
  • Territorial towards other plecos, so give each one its own cave.
  • Omnivorous, leaning towards meaty foods: sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp alongside vegetable matter.
  • Bottom-dweller.

This is a fish for a keeper who already runs a well-oxygenated, well-filtered tank and wants something less ordinary than a bristlenose. Do not buy it as a general algae eater; it will not do that job, and it needs more care than a starter pleco.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the current plecos.
