Methylene blue is an old and well-understood aquarium chemical, used mainly to hold fungus off fish eggs and in short baths for stressed or newly arrived fish.

Key features

  • Most commonly used by breeders to protect eggs from fungus in a hatching container or tumbler.
  • Also used as a bath treatment for superficial fungal patches and for fish that arrive in poor condition.
  • Kordon notes its long-established use in supporting fish exposed to nitrite, which is why it turns up in so many quarantine kits.
  • Suitable for fresh and salt water.

Important cautions

  • Not for tanks holding invertebrates. It is not suitable for shrimp, snails or corals.
  • It harms biological filtration and it stains silicone, decor, hands and clothing a strong blue. Use it in a bare hospital tank, a bucket or an egg container rather than in a display.
  • Expect deep blue water, and expect to need water changes and fresh carbon afterwards to clear it.
  • Doses for eggs, dips and tank treatments are not the same. Use the label for the job you are doing, and ask us if the situation is unusual.
