This listing is for female galaxy koi bettas (Betta splendens). Females are shorter-finned than males and slightly smaller in the body, but the assumption that they are drab is out of date — modern koi and galaxy lines produce females with patterning every bit as bold as their brothers. They are also more active and more inquisitive than most people expect, spending far more time exploring than a long-finned male does.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach around 5 to 6 cm.
- Tropical and heater-dependent, the same as males.
- A single female is comfortable in a heated, filtered tank of around 19 L or more.
- Needs surface access at all times to breathe air.
- Feed a quality betta pellet with frozen bloodworm or daphnia.
- Females are not automatically peaceful with one another; groups can and do fight.
A female betta does well kept singly, or in a community with corydoras, otocinclus and snails. Keeping several females together is often suggested, but it requires a large, heavily planted tank and a keeper prepared to separate fish at short notice — it is not a beginner project, and we would rather you knew that before buying a group.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the betta collection.
