The koi betta is a marbled line of Betta splendens bred to look like a nishikigoi carp, with irregular patches of red, orange, black and white scattered over a pale body. No two are marked alike, and the pattern often keeps shifting for months as the fish matures, so the fish you buy is not necessarily the fish you end up with. This one is a halfmoon male, meaning the tail opens to a full semicircle when he flares.
Aquarium care
- A single male per tank. Two males will fight, and it is serious.
- A labyrinth fish that breathes air at the surface, so leave a gap under the lid.
- Wants still or very gently moved water. Strong flow exhausts a long-finned male.
- Likes planting, floating cover and somewhere to rest near the surface.
- Carnivorous: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp.
- A jumper, so keep the tank covered.
Suits a small planted tank of its own, or a calm community with corydoras and small rasboras. Avoid fin nippers such as tiger barbs and serpae tetras, and avoid guppies, which a betta often mistakes for a rival.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current betta list.
