The gold severum is a xanthic line of the South American severum (Heros sp.), bred to a clear golden-yellow without the dark barring of the wild fish. The shape is what makes it: a tall, laterally flattened disc, closer to a discus in outline than to most cichlids, with a small mouth and calm, deliberate movement. Older fish often develop fine red-brown speckling across the face and gill covers.
Aquarium care
- A large, deep-bodied cichlid; it needs height as well as length.
- Calm and slow-moving, and easily outcompeted at feeding time.
- Prefers soft, warm water with wood and some shade.
- It will eat soft plants; use hardy species such as anubias or java fern.
- Pairs claim a flat surface to spawn on.
- Omnivorous with a vegetable component: cichlid pellets, frozen foods and greens.
A good centrepiece for a large South American tank with geophagus, larger tetras, angelfish and peaceful catfish. Small tetras will eventually be eaten, so size the tankmates accordingly.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current South American cichlids.
