The boesemani rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) comes from the lakes and streams of the Vogelkop peninsula in West Papua, and this is the locality line associated with Lake Aitinjo, selected for a deeper red in the rear half. A mature male is blue-grey through the head and front body, shading abruptly into orange-red behind, with the two halves meeting in a hard line. Females and young fish are silvery and give almost no hint of it.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches around 10 cm and is deep-bodied for its length.
  • Shoaling โ€” keep six or more, with several males so they display to one another.
  • Colours slowly. Juveniles look plain and it takes months, so judge adult fish rather than the stock tank.
  • Prefers hard, alkaline water, which suits most tap water in this region.
  • A strong swimmer that needs tank length and moderate flow.
  • Omnivorous; takes quality flake, pellets and frozen foods.

They suit a spacious community with barbs, larger tetras, other rainbowfish and peaceful catfish. They are quick, confident feeders, so avoid pairing them with shy or slow species that will lose out at every meal.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the rainbowfish collection.
