The blue turquoise discus is one of the oldest and best-established discus lines, carrying horizontal streaks of metallic blue-green running across a red-brown ground from the face to the tail. The amount of striping varies between fish and between suppliers, from fine broken lines to almost solid coverage. Discus are Amazonian cichlids from warm, still blackwater, and their flattened disc shape is built for holding position among sunken branches.
Aquarium care
- Needs a tall tank, deep front to back as well as high.
- Wants warm water at the upper end of the tropical range, held steady.
- Requires excellent water quality and a disciplined water change routine.
- Social. Keep five or more, or a settled pair.
- Feeds slowly: quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations.
- Stability matters more than chasing particular parameters.
Best kept in a species tank or with calm, warm-tolerant fish such as sterbai corydoras, cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras. Fast or boisterous tankmates outcompete them at feeding time.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current discus list.
