The blue Florida crayfish (Procambarus alleni) is a freshwater crayfish native to Florida, and the electric blue fish in the trade are a captive-bred colour line rather than the usual wild brown. It is a solid, confident animal that spends its day out in the open exploring, rearranging decor and picking through the substrate, rather than hiding under a rock. It moults as it grows, and it is worth knowing that a freshly moulted crayfish is soft and vulnerable for a day or two.

Aquarium care

  • Needs floor space rather than height, and a secure lid; crayfish climb out.
  • Territorial. One per tank unless the tank is large and full of caves.
  • Wants caves, pipes and wood so it can hide while moulting.
  • Omnivorous scavenger: sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables and frozen foods.
  • It will catch slow or resting fish, and it will eat dwarf shrimp and soft plants.
  • Leave the shed exoskeleton in the tank; the crayfish eats it back for calcium.

Best kept alone or with fast mid-water fish that stay well clear of the bottom. It is not compatible with shrimp, snails, slow bottom-dwellers or a carefully planted aquascape.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current crayfish and lobster list.
